Chapter 1
Ray Willis

“Right. Extra banana peppers… one Large Supreme with extra banana peppers… 81 Main Street… yes, the police department.”
Officer Ray Willis hung up with a huff. He had worked Friday nights for more years than he could count, and for the same amount of time, he had ordered the same thing to eat for dinner, and from the same restaurant no less. Before Joe’s Pizza had become Jeff’s Pizza, all he had to say was “the usual, Joe,” and he’d have his dinner before he could get the TV turned on. Now though, every Friday he had to hold some hormone-ridden teenager’s hand and walk him through the ins and outs of his order.

How hard is it to understand the necessity of extra banana peppers anyway? I’ll be lucky if it gets here in two hours. It could take that long to get a good picture on the TV.

Cedar Crest, population 3,986, was a sleepy little town filled with sleepy little people, who, for the most part, assembled parts for Sierra Labs in Albuquerque.  The equally small police department and the TV were about the same age, and worked about as well. The department consisted of a single story building with five rooms. The main front room had three desks that all the officers and one secretary shared, and a lobby area for people to wait their turn. The other four rooms consisted of two jail cells, a storage room, and a common bathroom. There were six officers on the force, Cedar Crest’s finest. There was no chief. Everyone just reported to the mayor if something important came up. Ray was the eldest of the bunch, by virtue of which, he was the group’s leader. As such, Ray made out the work schedules. He had taken the crappiest shift for himself. But even the crappiest shift had its advantages, Ray could watch all the TV he wanted with very little interruption--if he could just get the TV to work.

Ray smacked the television set as if he were trying to rouse a drunkard. Surprisingly, the third whack produced a picture on the set that was clear enough to watch.  “Blast it!”

It was one of those political things. There was some yahoo up on stage preaching about his vision for the country. Ray changed the channel and found that all three channels were playing the same thing. “Ugh!” He just wanted to watch Law and Order.
Surprisingly, the pizza he had ordered arrived in just under 30 minutes. Ray paid the driver and went back inside. It was going to be a long night. He was stuck watching the Republican National Convention.

The Republicans had selected John Maynard to represent their party in the 2012 election. Thousands of screaming supporters rallied as he delivered his acceptance speech: "It is an incontrovertible fact that when taxes are lowered, revenue increases. All the data of the GAO supports this. My domestic policy includes lowering taxes wherever possible. This will increase revenues into the government coffers, relieve the burden off of companies and employers, and stimulate the economy.”

Ray heard the words, but was not listening to them.

"The United States is such a great country. We are capable of doing so much. However, we burden ourselves with too many outside influences. One such influence is oil imp—”

When John Maynard abruptly stopped speaking, Ray looked up from his pizza. Maynard was on the ground, blood everywhere. The rallying cries from the audience hushed momentarily until the people assessed what had just happened. Then their cries sounded more like hysteria. Thousands screamed and trampled through the exit doors leaving a floor littered with Maynard ’12 signs and confetti. The cameras continued to roll as journalists eagerly jumped into their “breaking news” personas.

Ray stared in disbelief. It reminded him of watching the news the morning of September 11, 2001, and wondering whether what he'd seen was real. The phone rang and gave Ray a start, then he answered it. “Cedar Crest Police Department; Officer Willis speaking.”

“Ray, this is Ben over at Cattleman’s Crossing. I think you'd better get over here. There’s been a shooting!

George Bernard Shaw

From my first novel Letting Go:

It was George Bernard Shaw who first said, “Some people see things as they are, and ask why. I dream things that never were and ask why not.”

Quantum Computing

In my novels, computers play a huge roll. Specifically the potential for corruption.  At this point, I have to call that fiction because I do not have specific evidence to site real examples. I think we all know what the truth is though.

I have said before that Quantum computers are coming and mentioned that Google is just one of the organizations that has a quantum computer.

Now, go to this article by gizmag and get a taste of what quantum computers can do.

This should give everybody a little pause.

What is a Banshee?

From my novel Freedom's Banshee:

Look up the term BANSHEE and you will come back with several different definitions. For the purposes of this book, the term refers to a spirit or apparition (Usually a pretty female) that appears at the side of a warrior that has fallen in the field of battle. She appears to clean the warrior’s armor, his cloths, and his body before he goes into the hereafter.

Freedom's Banshee

From my novel Freedom's Banshee:

....Frank ran back out what remained of the front door of the hut and past the driver who had got out to assist with clearing the house. He jumped into the drivers’ side, jammed the car into gear, and gunned the engine. In an instant, he was racing down a dark, dusty ally. “Buzzard one. Give me some directions!”

From "Letting Go"

From my novel: "Letting Go"

Again, Rachael flashed back to Iraq. This time there's an enemy to shoot. She can protect her man, and she won’t stop until the threat is removed and Gary is safe. She worked to get herself between Jack and Blanchard, then, she continued toward Blanchard’s quivering body, pulling the trigger.

Jack heard Blanchard hit the floor. He knew he was safe, but he continued to hear the shots from Rachael’s Glock.

Jack looked up. Something's wrong. Rachael's in trouble. He sprang to his feet and came up behind her. He wrapped his hands around Rachael’s and took control of the smoking Glock.

The room went silent. After a short pause, Jack was able to take Rachael’s gun. Jack whispered, “It’s okay, sweetie. It’s okay now. We got the bad guy. It's all over. It's okay.”

The need for fusion energy

There are five main elements to the plots of my books, political corruption, big oil, fusion energy, conspiracy, and high tech computer gadgetry. https://www.ortexgraves.com

Today I will discuss the U.S. need for fusion energy.

The U.S. is such a powerful country, both militarily and economically. However, we are only realizing a fraction of our capabilities. Our industrial and creative might are throttled by the cost of energy.

If we look objectively at the industrial needs for energy, it is clear that there is an urgent need for a vast amount of energy. Today, that is something that only nuclear power plants or fossil fuel plants can deliver.

Wind turbines help, are interesting and do supply enough energy to satisfy some needs. However, they are ugly compared to natures’ beauty. I have driven quite a bit in the west and have seen several wind turbine farms. I have two reactions when I see them. First is “Isn’t that neat?” Second is, “It sure screws up the vista!” The same can be said for solar.

Furthermore, neither of those technologies provides the power needed to truly unleash the superiority and creative genius that is in the U.S. today.

On the other hand, conventional nuclear fission plants aren’t being built. Coal and fossil fuel plants run up against and army of environmental protests every time they are proposed. (Green house gases and all.)

We need to figure out how to create a lot of energy, cheaply or we will become irrelevant in the world community.

Tomorrow I will continue with more on fusion.

How big is fusion energy?

There are five main elements to the plots of my books, political corruption, big oil, fusion energy, conspiracy, and high tech computer gadgetry.

Today I will start a discussion on fusion energy.

There is a lot to say about fusion energy. So where to start? I guess I should address all the nay-sayers out there first.

Yes! There is fusion energy out there. Most notably in nature, GOD gave us the sun. But this is not what we want to talk about. We want to talk about man made, control of the fusion process to create electrical energy
.
Again YES! Fusion does exist. However, it has not been perfected to the point of commercial production of electrical energy as of yet. WHY? More on this later.

There are several scientific projects out there that are working on fusion. These projects are at the top of the list:

1) Lawrence Livermore National Labs/National Ignition Facility: Located in Livermore California, near Sacramento. The NIF is located within LLNL.

Go to Lawrence Livermore National Labs here: www.llnl.gov
Go directly to the National Ignition Facility here: https://lasers.llnl.gov

2) J.E.T. (Joint European Torus) Located in Culham, Oxfordshire, England.

Here is the latest, most comprehensive article about this project and fusion in general. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-27138087

3) Igniter: Russian-Italian project located near Moscow. Here is an early article on this project: http://www.technologyreview.com/news/419057/nuclear-reactor-aims-for-self-sustaining-fusion/

There is a very interesting comment in the last paragraph of this article: “…As a result, Igniter can only sustain ignition for bursts of four seconds…” This means that back in 2010 it was working. It was just getting too hot, a cooling problem.

4) I.T.E.R.: International Thermal Energy Research. Located in Cadarache, France. ITER is probably ‘The buzz word’ of fusion energy in the world today. Not necessarily the best project and not without debate.

You can visit ITER here: http://www.iter.org/

As you can see, there is a lot going on in the world of fusion energy. Why haven’t you ever heard about it? We will start asking that and similar questions soon.

Tomorrow I will continue with more on fusion.
